There may be times when you are feeling like you need immediate support but your therapist is unavailable.  Here are coping strategies:

  • Listen to music
  • Play with a pet
  • Going on a hike or a walk
  • Exercizing
  • Talk to a friend - even if you can't share everything you are experiencing
  • Take a bath or shower
  • Do creative activities - writing, art, singing, or any hobby
  • Practice deep breathing, meditation, or muscle relaxation
  • Call Emergency Numbers if you feel like you are unable to overcome your present situation

It would be helpful to understand Negative Coping Responses - These can be harmful

  • Criticizing yourself (negative self-talk)
  • Driving fast in a car
  • Chewing your fingernails
  • Becoming aggressive or violent (hitting someone, throwing or kicking something)
  • Eating too much or too little or drinking a lot of coffee
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Yelling at your spouse, children, or friends
  • Taking a recreational drug, or misusing prescription medicine
  • Avoiding friends and family
